This long trip included many campfires which, over time, imparted the aroma and slight taste of pine smoke into tea that traveled this route. Modern Russian Caravan is a blend which includes the addition of Chinese Lapsang Souchong, a black tea smoked over pine wood. Each tea producer tends to have their own variation with Assam and Ceylon teas commonly part of the mix.
